NYC Pride March

Jun 13, 2022

This June has been one big celebration of Pride Month with multiple events and happenings around town, devoted to the LGBTQ+ community.

The culmination of the events is taking place on June 26th with the Pride March!

The NYC Pride March will begin at noon on June 26th from 25th Street and 5th Avenue. Marchers will proceed south on 5th Avenue before heading west on 8th Street. After crossing over 6th Avenue, the March will continue on Christopher Street passing the Stonewall National Monument. It will then turn north on 7th Avenue, passing the New York City AIDS Memorial, before dispersing in Chelsea at 16th Street and 7th Avenue.

More than 75% percent of all marching groups are non-profit organizations, and more than half of all marching groups are participating free-of-charge.

Heritage of Pride

The Pride march is devoted to bringing up the subject of eliminating discrimination and having equal rights under the law. The march and the side events aim to inspire, educate and celebrate the diversity of the community.

The movement started in 1969 in Stonewall, where police raided a bar due to rumours of it being an underground gay community. However, people fought back and that became known as the Stonewall Riots.

1970 was the year of the first Pride march. 1979 marked the year of the first National march. Since then, the years after have marked progress, more opportunities for openly speaking about the community and addressing the challenges and discrimination faced daily.
